Philosophy
The Montessori method
of education is practiced in nearly 5,000 public and private schools in the United States and 35,000
schools worldwide.
This philosophy of education was developed by Dr. Maria
Montessori who was born in Italy in 1870, and became one of Italy's first female
physicians. Trained as a scientist, Maria Montessori developed her method of
education by observing children as they worked and learned in a carefully
prepared environment. She discovered that children learn best through
investigation and discovery, and that there are windows of opportunity in
children's lives when they are able to learn certain things more easily than at
any other time in their development. A Montessori education presents children
with the right lessons at the right times. The seeds of this method of education
fall on the fertile ground of developmental readiness where they can grow and
blossom into knowledge.
Children at New Horizons are in classes of 18 months-3 years, 3-6 years, and
9-12 years old. Caring communities are fostered by these mixed age groupings
where children experience mentoring and being mentored by their peers. Children
and their families build trusting relationships with guides or teachers they
will have for three years. Three year groupings allow for a wider choice of
academic activities and social relationships.
Our meticulously prepared classrooms contain Montessori materials which are
hands-on materials the children can choose and learn from independently. They
are manipulated by the students to illustrate concepts such as width, length,
and quantity, as well as to give algebra and square root concrete form. These
materials are elegant and beautiful.
New Horizons Montessori School is true to the joyful practice of the Montessori
method. Children explore, learn, and perfect themselves as they choose
activities which allow them to develop concentration, self discipline, and the
expectation that they will experience success and satisfaction in their work. |
